About Dr. Joe FitzGibbon

Dr. E. Joe FitzGibbon qualified in Medicine from the National University of Ireland, Galway, in 1981. After his internship he studied laboratory medicine at the Royal Liverpool Hospital, UK. 1984 was spent in a voluntary capacity as medical officer to the Ameva Bible School, Zimbabwe. On returning to Europe he started vocational training for general practice, completing the certificate of Prescribed Experience in 1988, and receiving Diplomas in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (1987) and Geriatric Medicine (1988 ).

Dr FitzGibbon then worked as a Principal in general practice and as a Clinical Assistant in Accident and Emergency Medicine in the UK. During this time his wife, Aoife, became very ill with debilitating fatigue and hemiplegic migraine. The story of her illness and subsequent dramatic recovery is detailed in Feeling Tired all the Time. As a direct result of this personal experience, Dr FitzGibbon developed a lasting interest in allergic medicine, chemical sensitivity, and states of chronic debilitating fatigue. He eventually left general practice in 1990 to return to his native Ireland where he has pursued these interests.

Whilst working with patients who suffered from food allergy and/or intolerance, Dr. FitzGibbon became interested in other aspects of Nutritional Medicine. In particular, he became interested in the health issues of overweight and obesity. He completed a Masters degree in Nutritional Medicine 2002 at the University of Surrey, Guildford, UK.

Dr. FitzGibbon currently resides in Galway with his wife, Aoife. They have four children. He receives referrals from colleagues throughout the country, as well as from Northern Ireland and the UK. He is also actively involved in writing articles and books on these subjects, as well as giving lectures and seminars to interested groups. He has published in scientific journals and provides the module on Chronic Debilitating Fatigue for the Diploma in Therapeutics offered by Irish College of General Practitioners
